The holiday season is a time to reflect on the people who make our lives easier and brighter throughout the year—especially those who provide essential services in our homes and buildings. It’s a wonderful tradition to express our appreciation with a thoughtful tip. But how much is appropriate? And who should you be tipping? We’ve got you covered with our Annual Holiday Tipping Guide, designed to help you show gratitude to those who help you every day.

Do I Have to Tip?

While tipping is a holiday custom rather than a requirement, it’s a tradition that’s generally appreciated. A holiday tip is a thoughtful gesture that can go a long way in building goodwill with the people who assist you year-round.

How Much Should I Tip Building Staff?

Tipping varies based on your building size, length of residence, the level of service, and your relationship with the staff. Here’s a helpful framework:

  • Superintendent/Resident Manager: $150–$300 (average), up to $500 for larger buildings
  • Doorman/Concierge: $75–$200 (average), $50–$1,000 for exceptional service
  • Porter/Handyman: $25–$50
  • Garage Attendant: $25–$75

Tipping New Staff Members

Newer staff members, like a first-year doorman, typically receive smaller tips (often half of what a senior staff member might receive). It’s all about the level of service and the rapport you’ve built over time.

Should I Tip More Based on Rent or Apartment Size?

Tipping should be about service, not the size of your apartment or rent. Rewarding good service is what matters most!

What About Non-Building Service Workers?

Don’t forget about those who assist you outside your building. Here are some general guidelines for other service providers:

  • Housekeeper/Cleaning Person: One to two weeks of pay
  • Full-Time Nanny: One week’s pay (or two if you can afford it)
  • Regular Babysitter: $25–$50 in cash or a gift card
  • UPS Delivery Driver: $25–$50 (if you receive a lot of packages)
  • Mail Carrier: $25–$50 (gift card or small gift, as cash is prohibited)
  • Hairdresser/Barber: The cost of one service
  • Personal Trainer/Yoga Instructor: The cost of one session

When is the Best Time to Tip?

Early December is the ideal time to offer your holiday tips, allowing staff to use the funds for their own holiday shopping. Plus, it’s a great way to get ahead of the rush!

Happy Holidays!
